You must have heard about military officials and individuals receiving military honors at time of their retirement or achieving big things for the country. But have you ever heard a dog receiving military honors? So, here’s the breakthrough as “Eddie” the Belgian Malinois dog has received military honors at the time of his retirement. But the question is why? Why a dog has been honored and what were the services granted by this Beligan Malinois?
Eddie served as a bomb sniffing dog in MacDill’s 6th Security Forces Squadron under the custody of Sgt. Shannon Hutto. Accordign to Hutto, one day as he was serving in Afghanistan; his bomb sniffing dog stopped and refused to move from a certain point. Eddie became angry and he was thinking his dog to be lazy and by that moment; he Hutto just saw a homemade bomb that was smelled by his dog. It was half buried in dirt. Hutto described this moment as the most stressful as he was just six inches away from that bomb. And he is thankful to his dog for saving his life.
After sometime, Eddie smelled another explosive that was placed on to a bridge from where the patrol unit had to cross. The bomb was defused and he was acknowledged as hero for saving lives of patrol members. Eddie also performed its services and helped the officials in sweeping government buildings and served for identification of potential explosives at venues to be visited by president or vice president.
After retirement, Eddie will be reunited with his handler, Mr. Andrew Grymes. Hutto acknowledged and admired Eddie’s services by saying that he is always thankful to Eddie for protecting his life.
Eddie was just surprised and quiet at his retirement ceremony as he could not interpret the real meaning of this ceremony. He was just witnessing people clapping, saluting and talking and was standing quiet and appeared flummoxed when somebody officially handed Hutto a commemorative inscription.
But Eddie could not stop when an Air Force contractor offered him a special cake prepared with butter, peanut and bananas. He jumped into it and finished it right away. During his services, he was not allowed to enjoy such luxuries but nowadays he is gratis to enjoy the delight.
